Valentine Facts:
Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred because he refused to renounce his faith. He was clubbed, stoned and beheaded on 14th February A.D.269. During the reign of the Emperor Claudius II marriage was forbidden, but Valentine defied the law and married couples in secret. After Valentine's death, he was named a saint. As Christianity spread through Rome, the priests moved Lupercalia from February 15 to February 14 and renamed it St. Valentine's Day to honor Saint Valentine. In pagan times people believed that birds began mating on 14th February. Lovebirds soon became associated with St. Valentine. The custom of celebrating St. Valentine's Day reached the USA in the 15th Century. Nowadays over 20 million Valentine cards are sent worldwide. Who was Cupid ?? Cupid has long played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. He is known as a mischievous, winged child, whose arrows who would pierce the hearts of his victims causing them to fall deeply in love. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman's he was Cupid, and his mother Venus. |
